Concrete for Waterloo Homes and Acreages

Waterloo is a small village, and the work people bring to concrete contractors in Waterloo reflects that: a shop floor on an acreage, a new driveway apron, a patio behind an older house in the village, or steps that have pulled away from a porch. The Union Pacific designated a stop at Waterloo in 1870, and the village was founded in 1883. It sits along the Elkhorn River in western Douglas County, about 20 miles west of Omaha.

Between two rivers

Near Fremont, the Platte turns sharply and flows south-southeast for about 10 miles to around Waterloo. The Elkhorn runs past the village on its way to the Platte. River-bottom ground like this tends to be flat, with sandier soil and a water table that rises in wet springs. That shapes how we build. We excavate deep enough to remove soft organic topsoil, compact a crushed rock base, and set slab elevations so water drains away rather than pooling at the edge.

On acreages, we also look at how water reaches the slab from the wider property: a long gravel drive that sheds water toward the shop, a downspout that empties onto the apron, or a low spot in the yard where snowmelt collects. Fixing those before the pour saves a slab later.

After the 2024 storm

The April 26, 2024 tornado overturned multiple center pivots on acreages in western Douglas County before crossing the Elkhorn southeast of Waterloo. Some properties in the area lost outbuildings and had driveways and slabs damaged during cleanup. If you are rebuilding a shop or machine shed, we can pour the new floor and aprons once the building plan is set, and we coordinate with your builder on anchor bolts and post locations.

Shop and outbuilding floors

Shop floors are some of the most demanding slabs we pour around Waterloo. They carry trucks, tractors and trailers, and they often have a floor drain, radiant heat tubing or a thickened edge for the walls. We talk through how the building will be used before choosing thickness and reinforcement. A shop that holds a pickup and lawn equipment needs a different slab than one that will park a loaded grain truck.

Village homes

In the village itself, the jobs are smaller but just as important to get right:

  • Driveway replacement on older lots, including alley access
  • Front walks, stoops and steps with even risers and good traction
  • Back patios and slabs under decks
  • Garage floors replaced after settling
  • Sidewalk panel repair where roots or frost have lifted sections

Waterloo Questions

How thick should a shop floor be?

It depends on what the shop will hold. A slab for a pickup and lawn equipment is lighter than one for loaded farm trucks or heavy equipment, so we size the thickness and reinforcement to your use.

Can you pour around radiant heat tubing or a floor drain?

Yes. We plan the layout with you or your plumber, set the drain at the right height and slope the floor toward it.

Do you work on acreages outside the village?

Yes. Much of our Waterloo-area work is on acreages, including shop floors, aprons and equipment pads.

Can you pour concrete near the Elkhorn River where the ground stays wet?

Yes, with more base work. We dig out soft, organic soil, bring in compacted crushed rock and set the slab high enough that spring water drains away from it instead of sitting at the edges. On very wet sites we may add drain tile around a shop pad.

Is it worth replacing an old village sidewalk panel by panel?

If only a few panels are lifted or broken, yes. We saw-cut at the joints, remove the bad sections and pour new panels that sit flush with the good ones.
