Concrete for Plattsmouth's Hills and Old Homes

Plattsmouth is named for its location at the mouth of the Platte River, where it joins the Missouri, and the town climbs steeply away from the water. Much of the work that comes to concrete contractors in Plattsmouth is on older homes on hillside streets: long flights of front steps, retaining edges along walks, sloped driveways and patios carved out of the hill behind the house.

A rail town's housing stock

The Burlington and Missouri River Railroad arrived in 1869 and turned Plattsmouth into a major rail hub. Many neighborhoods took shape in the decades that followed, and a lot of homes here are old enough that their concrete has been replaced or patched more than once. Older steps are often poured over the remains of earlier steps, and old walks may be thin slabs set on bare soil. When we replace concrete on a historic home, we remove the old material fully, build a proper base and pour new concrete that fits the house.

Loess bluffs

Plattsmouth is one of the eastern Nebraska towns with loess topography along the Missouri River valley. Loess is a fine silt laid down by wind. It can hold a steep, nearly vertical face when dry, and it softens and erodes when wet. On a hillside lot, that means water from the yard above can wash out the soil under steps, walks and driveways. We plan drainage around every slab, sometimes with a small curb or swale, so runoff goes around the concrete rather than under it.

History at the river

The Lewis and Clark expedition passed the mouth of the Platte, just north of present-day Main Street, on July 21, 1804. Downtown Plattsmouth still has the look of a 19th-century river and railroad town. For homes in and near the older core, plain broom-finish concrete with neat joints usually fits better than heavily patterned stamped work out front, while a stamped or colored patio in the backyard can still be a good choice.

Steps done right

Steps are where we spend a lot of time in Plattsmouth. Uneven risers are a trip hazard, especially on long flights from the sidewalk to a raised front porch. We measure the total rise, split it into even steps, add landings on long runs and set anchors for handrails. Air-entrained concrete and a sealed surface help steps stand up to snow, ice and de-icer.

Plattsmouth Questions

Can you replace a long flight of front steps on an older home?

Yes. We remove the old steps completely, set a solid base and pour new steps with even risers, landings where needed and handrail anchors.

What finish suits an older Plattsmouth home?

A clean broom finish with neat joints usually fits historic fronts best. Stamped or colored concrete often works well for back patios.

Why does the soil wash out under my hillside walk?

Loess erodes when runoff flows under concrete. We fix the drainage along with the walk so the new concrete keeps its support.

Can you pour a driveway on a steep Plattsmouth lot?

Yes. We use a coarse broom finish for traction, close joint spacing to control cracking and a flatter landing at the garage, with a drainage plan at the bottom of the slope.

Do you replace public sidewalk panels in front of older homes?

Yes. We remove the broken or heaved panels and pour new ones that line up with the walk on either side.
