Concrete Work in Nebraska's Cement Town

Few towns have as close a tie to concrete as Louisville. Ash Grove Cement Company of Kansas City opened a factory here in 1927 on the old Murphy Quarry grounds. The company owns nearly 4,000 acres of land and quarries in the area and produces about a million tons of cement a year. So when people look for concrete contractors in Louisville, they are hiring in a town where the main ingredient of concrete is made just down the road.

A river town in northern Cass County

Louisville sits in northern Cass County on the Platte River, about 18 miles west of Plattsmouth and the Missouri. It traces its beginning to 1857, only three years after the territory formed, and the Burlington railroad arrived in 1870. In 1881, the Burlington completed a bridge over the Platte and the Missouri Pacific arrived. The town had 1,319 residents in 2020, up from 1,106 in 2010.

The Platte valley brings flat, sandy bottom ground near the river and rolling bluffs away from it. Those two settings call for different slab work. Near the river, we plan for slow drainage and a higher water table, building up the base and setting slabs above the surrounding grade. On the bluffs, we focus on stopping runoff from flowing under the concrete.

Older homes, long histories

Louisville's history includes the Louisville Stone Ware Company, which grew from white clay Capt. J.T.A. Hoover found on his land in 1863, and Huber and Sons Louisville Mills, a steam-powered flour mill opened in 1876. Many homes in town are old enough that their walks, steps and driveways have been patched or replaced more than once. When we work on an older property, we remove failed concrete completely and pour new work on a proper base rather than adding another overlay.

Acreages and outbuildings

The country around Louisville is a mix of farms, acreages and recreation property along the Platte. Shop floors, machine sheds, aprons where a gravel lane meets the garage and pads for equipment are frequent requests. We size thickness and reinforcement to the load, plan floor drains and radiant tubing ahead of the pour, and grade the site so water moves away from the building.

Common Louisville projects

  • Driveway replacement on town lots
  • Front steps, porches and walks on older homes
  • Patios for backyards, plain or stamped
  • Shop, barn and garage floors on acreages
  • Aprons and equipment pads
  • Sidewalk panel replacement

Built for freeze-thaw

Cass County winters swing between thaw and hard freeze. We use air-entrained concrete on every exterior pour, avoid pouring on frozen ground and protect fresh slabs when a cold night follows the pour. We also recommend sealing new driveways and walks and holding off on harsh de-icers the first winter. Call (531) 217-5944 to schedule a visit.

Louisville Questions

Do you work in Louisville and northern Cass County?

Yes. We serve Louisville, the surrounding acreages and nearby towns along the Platte.

Can you pour a shop floor on sandy river-bottom ground?

Yes. We compact a rock base, set the floor above the surrounding grade and slope the apron so water drains away.

Should I seal a new driveway?

We recommend it. Sealer helps protect the surface from freeze-thaw and de-icing salt, especially during the first few winters.

Can you rebuild the front steps on an older Louisville home?

Yes. We remove the old steps completely, build a solid base and pour new steps with even risers, adding handrail anchors if you want them.

Do you pour aprons where a gravel lane meets the road?

Yes. A concrete apron keeps gravel from washing onto the road and gives a firm surface where vehicles turn in.
