Concrete Work in the Platte Valley
Valley was laid out in 1864, ahead of the Union Pacific railroad, and named for the Platte River valley it sits in. That setting is the first thing we think about as concrete contractors in Valley. Flat river-valley ground is easy to build on but slow to drain, and soils near the river tend to be sandier with a higher water table than the hills closer to Omaha. A slab that would be fine on upland clay can behave differently here, so we plan the base and drainage with the valley in mind.
Drainage on flat ground
On a flat lot there is little natural fall to carry water off a driveway or patio. We build in slope on purpose, typically pitching patios away from the house and crowning or cross-sloping driveways so water reaches the yard or ditch. For garage and shop floors, we set the slab elevation so the overhead door is above the surrounding grade. Water standing against the edge of a slab, then freezing, is what breaks up so much concrete in this part of Nebraska.
Weather watchers next door
Valley is home to the National Weather Service office that serves parts of eastern Nebraska and southwest Iowa. Weather matters on every pour, and in spring and fall we track the forecast closely. Concrete should not go down on frozen ground, and fresh slabs need protection if a hard freeze follows the pour. In summer heat, we schedule early starts so the finishers can work the surface before it sets too fast.
After the 2024 tornado
The April 26, 2024 tornado touched down near the Platte River in Douglas County and crossed the Elkhorn southeast of Waterloo on its way toward Elkhorn and Blair. Properties in its path around western Douglas County have needed concrete replaced as they were repaired. If yours was one of them, we can look at driveways, walks and slabs and tell you in writing what is sound and what is not.
Acreages, lakes and town lots
The area around Valley mixes in-town homes, lake developments and rural acreages, and each needs different concrete. In town, the common jobs are driveway replacements, front walks and steps. Around the lakes, we pour patios, walks down to the water side of the lot and pads for storage. On acreages, the big jobs are shop floors, long driveway aprons and pads for equipment.
- Shop and pole barn slabs with a compacted base and reinforcement for vehicles
- Driveways and aprons, including the transition from a gravel lane to concrete
- Patios for lake and in-town homes
- Walks and steps at the front entry and around the house
- Equipment and storage pads

Valley Questions
Does sandy valley soil change how you pour a slab?
It changes the base and drainage plan. Sandy soil drains well but can shift if water runs under the slab, so we compact the base carefully and slope the concrete so water moves away from it.
Can you replace a gravel driveway apron with concrete?
Yes. We pour concrete aprons at the road or garage end of a gravel lane and transition the gravel so it does not wash against the slab edge.
Do you pour shop floors on acreages near Valley?
Yes. We size the thickness and reinforcement for the vehicles and equipment the shop will hold.
Can you pour a patio at a lake home near Valley?
Yes. We set the patio above the lawn, slope it away from the house and finish it for good traction when wet. Stamped finishes should be sealed and resealed every few years.
