Bennington Concrete for a Growing Town

Bennington has more than doubled in recent decades, and the people who call concrete contractors in Bennington include both longtime residents of the old town and families in brand-new subdivisions. The population went from 937 in 2000 to 1,458 in 2010 and 2,026 in 2020, a 39 percent jump in the last decade alone. Originally called Bunz Town, it was founded in the 1880s when the Fremont, Elkhorn and Missouri Valley Railroad was extended to that point, and its present name honors Bennington, Vermont.

Rebuilding after the 2024 tornado

On April 26, 2024, an EF4 tornado struck Bennington and severely damaged 60 to 65 homes. As those houses have been repaired or rebuilt, driveways, walks, steps and garage floors have often needed replacing too. Some concrete was broken by debris. Some was cracked later by the excavators, dumpsters and delivery trucks that came in for cleanup and rebuilding.

If your home was affected, we can walk the property and separate sound concrete from damaged concrete, then put it in a written estimate you can share with your insurer or builder. On a rebuild, we schedule the flatwork near the end, once heavy equipment is off the site.

New-construction lots

Bennington's newer neighborhoods sit on recently graded ground. Fill soil keeps settling for a few years, especially next to foundations where basements were dug and backfilled. When we add a patio or extend a driveway on a new lot, we compact a crushed rock base, check the grade so water runs away from the house and set control joints so any movement shows up as straight joints rather than random cracks.

Rain and freeze

Bennington averages about 32.84 inches of precipitation a year based on 1991 to 2020 normals, and like the rest of eastern Nebraska it goes through many freeze-thaw cycles each winter. Water that gets under a slab and then freezes is one of the main reasons concrete heaves and cracks here. Downspouts that empty onto a driveway, a patio pitched toward the house or a walk that sits lower than the lawn all invite that kind of damage. We fix those problems as part of the job rather than pouring new concrete into the same conditions.

Old town, new town

In the original part of Bennington, near the rail line, the jobs are often older concrete: front steps that have settled, sidewalks with lifted panels and narrow driveways to detached garages. In the new subdivisions, the requests are patios, driveway extensions and walks to the backyard. We do both.

  • Driveway replacement and extensions
  • Backyard patios, plain or stamped
  • Walks and steps at the front entry and side yard
  • Garage floors and shed pads
  • Storm-damage replacement on repaired homes

Covenants and planning

New Bennington subdivisions often have covenants on driveway width and patio placement. Send them our way and we will design to them. Call (531) 217-5944 to schedule a visit.

Bennington Questions

Can you replace concrete damaged during my Bennington rebuild?

Yes. We assess driveways, walks, steps and garage floors, put the findings in a written estimate and pour once the heavy construction traffic is done.

Is it too soon to add a patio on my new Bennington lot?

Usually not, as long as the base is built right. We compact rock under the patio, slope it away from the house and joint it to control any settling.

Do you work in the older part of town?

Yes. We replace steps, sidewalks, driveways and garage floors on older Bennington homes as well as newer ones.

How long until I can drive on my new Bennington driveway?

Most driveways can take normal car traffic in about a week. Heavy trucks and trailers should wait longer, and we will give you a specific date after the pour.
